Hello Reader,
First of all, thank you to everyone who sent well wishes my way after last week’s email!
I got a lot of them, so if I didn’t reply, do know that I saw it and I appreciated it a lot!
I’m going to do a more thorough breakdown of my experience at CSS Day later this week, probably as a blog post, but as a quick recap, CSS Day was absolutely amazing!
A great event, in a great city, with tons of great people, and all centered on CSS, you can’t ask for much more than that 😁.
As for my talk, it was my first time on a stage anywhere close to this scale, so I was incredibly nervous.
Once I got through the first couple of minutes and remembered to breathe, things went better, and I think the talk went pretty well in the end.
CSS Day makes the replays of the talks public after a bit of a delay, so once mine is up I will make sure to include it in the newsletter here 🙂.
I also want to say thank you to everyone who came to chat with me.
It was so fun meeting so many great people, and so much fun being able to nerd out about CSS all day and, on more than one occasion, late into the night 😁.
🙋♂️ What I’ve been up to this week
Other than talking at CSS Day, I did put out a couple of videos!
We can now transition to and from display: none
This is something that most of us have been waiting for, for a long time, and it’s pretty incredible that it’s now possible.
Browser support is far from perfect, but it’s incredibly easy to do.
Animations using @keyframes
are a little more straightforward, but it’s not hard to do with transition
either, and it’s so nice that it just works!
A great way to keep up with CSS
People are always asking me how I manage to keep up with CSS, and I usually mention following some of the dev rels from the browsers on social media, like Adam Argyle, Una Kravets, Bramus, and Jen Simmons, and also keeping an eye on new browser features as they come out.
There are great sites and blogs out there that do a fantastic job of talking about new features, but there are a lot of them out there and it can be hard to keep up with all of them, sp when dev.to reached out to see if I’d want to feature them in a Short, it seemed like a great fit.
They’re like a curated aggregator of dev-related content based on your interests. If you’re looking for an easy way to keep up with all the happenings, I’d recommend you at least give them a look 🙂.
🔗 Other awesome stuff around from the web
Cascading Layouts: A workshop on resilient CSS layouts
One of the people I was most excited to meet at CSS Day was Miriam Suzanne (who also happened to be the MC on the day I was talking!).
She’s been one of my CSS heroes for a long time, so it was great to finally meet and hang out with her.
One of the things that came up while chatting was that she’s hosting a 3-day workshop next month on creating maintainable CSS layouts with progressive enhancements.
If you want to learn about creating modern CSS layouts from the person who co-wrote the spec on container queries, layers, and scope, this is your chance!
🏁
Have a fantastic week!
Kevin
