Google might have just killed websites

Hello Reader,

More and more people I deeply respect and have learned a lot from over the years feel like they are speaking into a void, to the point where they are losing motivation to continue making content.

And I know it’s not only people making content, either. While some people are embracing the changes, many feel things have changed and that their jobs are no longer what they signed up for, leading them to lose the passion for the web they once had.

And seeing talented people lose motivation bums me the hell out.

It turns out I had more to say than I first expected, so you’ll have to head on over to my site, where I posted my first article in over a year, to talk more about this.

If you don’t have time to read it, the tl;dr is, if there are educational content creators you value, let them know. They might write, make videos, or whatever else it might be.

Times are tough, and talented people are fading away. A few encouraging words from a real person can make a huge difference… and while I appreciate it if you reply to this email to let me know, I’d much rather you take the time to let someone else know. I have a larger audience than many others, and I know there are a lot of people reading this and watching my videos who appreciate what I do.

Go reach out to others, whether it’s just a comment on a blog post or video, or send them an email or a DM. Something, anything, to let them know there are still real people out there who value what they are doing, and help give them the motivation they need to keep on making it.

Google might have just killed websites

If it weren't for the part above, I'd have led off with this, but I posted something on the second channel about how Google's new "search" might potentially be the end of a lot of websites.

If you haven't heard, they announced the new version of "search" at Google I/O this week, and it's going beyond the current AI summaries you have at the top, with essentially fully personalized responses, without a link to click on anywhere, which is why I keep putting search in quotation marks.

Matthias Ott has a very good article on this that goes a bit more in-depth than I did, including links to more information on how they're monetizing the responses.

🙋‍♂️ What I’ve been up to this week

It's not all doom and gloom! Here's a bit of more regular content 😅.

5 underrated CSS properties every developer should know

Quick looks at counters, user-select: none, tabular-nums, multi-column, and text decoration styling.

⚡ You’re writing twice as much CSS as you need to

A quick look at one benefit of using mix-color() instead of relative colors. If you prefer long-form content, I did a long video on this one last week.

📝 Quiz time!

Which HTML attribute is used on a button to open or close an element that has the popover attribute, without writing any JavaScript?

  1. popovercontrol
  2. popovertarget
  3. popovertoggle
  4. togglepopover

As per usual, you'll have to head on over to YouTube to take a stab at the quiz, and once you answer, you'll see if you were right or not.

🏁

Have a fantastic week!
Kevin

Hello Reader, From my experience, there are a few reasons people push back on new things, but the most common one I see revolves around people preferring the old way of doing things. This makes sense, because they are comfortable with what they are used to, rather than the new way, which is different. When something new comes along, that means they have to learn it, which for a lot of people means that it’s slower. The thing is, in...

View this email in your browser (or share it with a friend!) Hello Reader, Last week on my second channel, I asked a question near the end of the video about whether or not people are worried that, thanks to more and more people using AI to write code, there would be less pressure on languages to evolve. That led to a lot of interesting comments, with a bit of a split on people’s opinions. The two main arguments were: AI producing more and more code just builds up the training data on the...

View this email in your browser (or share it with a friend!) Hello Reader,It’s hard not to come back from an event like CSS Day and not be excited about the future of CSS, and the web in general. There is a lot to be concerned about with the current state of things, but one thing that is super clear is that there are still a lot of super passionate people who love their craft, and seeing that passion, both in the talks from other speakers as well as when chatting with attendees, you can’t...
