One million thanks!

Hello Reader,

On Saturday morning, I passed 1 million subscribers on YouTube.

I created my channel over 9 years ago.

Around 5 months in, I hit 100 subscribers, and at the time, I was blown away that so many people liked my videos enough to bother subscribing.

Three years later, I'd passed 100,000 subscribers, which I honestly didn't think was possible for a channel dedicated to vanilla HTML & CSS.

And now it's one million.

For a long time, I stopped caring about my subscriber count.

It's very much a vanity stat, and for the past ~2 years I've known I'd eventually hit 1 million. As the number slowly ticked up, it felt less like an achievement and more like something that momentum would eventually take care of.

But on Thursday, when I was under 100 subs away, I started to get nervous about it all for some reason.

This was never meant to be a thing.

I started my channel as a hobby project. It was an excuse to explore things outside of what I talked about every day as part of my job.

In a lot of ways, it still feels like a hobby project where I get to play around with CSS all day long and share some of what I'm learning along the way.

Without you, this never would have happened.

This hobby project would have eventually become like all my other hobby projects, fading off as I turned my interest to other things. I don't know where my life would be right now, but I'm in a very privileged place where I get to nerd out about CSS all day long, and it's all thanks to you.

So a million thanks for watching, sharing, and supporting me, whether you're a newer follower or have been around since the start.

This wouldn't have been possible without your support.

🙋‍♂️ What I’ve been up to this week

📺1,000,000

I was originally planning to do a live stream today, but on Saturday morning when I realized I was about to hit the 1 million mark, I decided to jump on right away.

📺 Create a reflective glow effect with CSS

video preview

I saw a Dribbble post that had a subtle glow on a button, but the glow was also reflecting on a border above and below it, and I wanted to see if I could replicate that effect 😊.

You can find the finished code here.

⚡ Shorts

I’m doing a bit of an experiment with Shorts over the next few months.

I’ll be putting more of them out and mixing things up a bit, too. At least one each week will still be a quick tip like I usually do, while the others are me trying new things to see if anything sticks.

This week I talk about the challenges of content planning and scheduling, and my preference for simple tools like pen-and-paper calendars over an excess of apps.

This Friday, my bracket of the March MadCSS tournament will be taking place over on the SyntaxFM YouTube channel, where you'll see how I did against Amy Dutton.

If you missed it, the other side of the bracket took place this past Friday, and I must say I'm a bit jealous of the production quality!

🏁

I've mentioned this a couple of times, but it's coming up quickly, so a quick reminder that I’ll be in Amsterdam for Smashing Conf from April 13th to the 16th, where I’ll be giving a talk, as well as hosting a full-day in-person workshop.

They have a bunch of ticket options, including student pricing. If you aren’t in Amsterdam, there is an online ticket option as well, and you can use this link to get a decent discount.

Have a fantastic week!
Kevin

View this email in your browser (or share it with a friend!) Hello Reader, I’m writing this from the airport, a few hours into a nine-hour layover. When I booked the flight, I knew this would be a long one, but I have a pile of work to get through, so it’s been a surprisingly productive Saturday. I normally try to avoid working on weekends, but over the last two months, it’s been more the norm than the exception. The launch of CSS Demystified, which just wrapped up, followed by my talk and...

Hello Reader, Sometimes you run into a CSS problem, and you do everything right, but still can't figure out what is going on. You don’t pile on Band-Aids. You stop and think about why it’s happening. You narrow it down to a specific question. You search for an answer. And you get nothing. This happened to one of my students a while back. They added padding to an element, and that padding covered the text of the paragraph above it. They played around with it and tried a few different things....

Hello Reader, Yesterday I told you about the mindset shift that changed everything for me, and how I started working with the browser instead of against it. I’ve spent a long time figuring out how to pass that same shift on to others, and that’s why I created CSS Demystified, which is now open for enrollment. Before I get into the details, I want to tell you why I built it the way I did. I spent five years teaching in a classroom before I moved to online education full-time. And the thing...
