Weekly newsletter, where I talk about tangentially-related front-end development topics and share what I've been up to in the last week, plus any cool/fun/interesting/useful links I come across as well.
I’m not panicking about the talk itself right now, but as I’ve spent time working on my talk this week, imposter syndrome has hit hard.
I know for a lot of people, and especially with newer developers, I’m either the person or one of a handful of people they think of when they think of CSS, so it might seem a little crazy for me to be having imposter syndrome, but boy is it here 😅.
Some of you have been subscribed to this channel long enough to know this happened the last time I spoke there as well. I was sort of hoping it would be better this time, but nope!
I’ll be sharing a stage with a lot of the people I’ve learned a lot about CSS from, like Lea Verou, who wrote the first CSS book I ever purchased, and Eric freaking Meyer, not to mention the rest of the incredible lineup.
On top of that, there’s an added pressure when your talk revolves around a couple of features that people in the front row of the audience wrote the spec for 😆.
I do keep telling myself I deserve my spot, and somewhere in the back of my mind I know I wouldn't have been invited back for a second time if that wasn't true, but it doesn't make me feel any better in the moment!
Anyway, all this is to say that if you’re ever feeling like you’re not deserving of something, don’t belong somewhere, or have any type of self-doubt, it’s all very normal.
🙋♂️ What I’ve been up to this week
📺 Perfect text contrast without the guesswork: contrast-color() explained
With it recently hitting Baseline Newly Available, I took a quick look at contrast-color(). I start by looking at the absolute basics of it, and then how I’d use it in production with the help of color-mix() and light-dark().
Some people asked last week for details about the small productivity change that has proved to be a pretty big game-changer for me. It revolves around how I've been using Notion to stay organized, and I basically finally found a way of working that makes sense.
I made a quick video here looking at what I've done. It's really nothing ground-breaking in any way, but after years of working with my Notion set up, I wish I'd done this a *long* time ago.
Have a fantastic week! Kevin
P.S. If you are planning to go to CSS Day and haven't got a ticket yet, don't wait too long because it's coming up fast!
And if you like to book things like this ahead of time, I will be in Zurich in September for ZurichJS as well.

View this email in your browser (or share it with a friend!) Hello Reader, The pattern of shorter newsletters continues for me, as I continue my prep for CSS Day. I’m writing this on Thursday morning (my normal newsletter writing time), and yesterday, as I was rehearsing my talk, I realized I had a pretty big oversight in my talk, so I spent the rest of the day reshuffling things and updating the demos I’m using. It all means it’ll be a stronger talk, but I’ll be on the plane to the...
View this email in your browser (or share it with a friend!) PRE-S: A quick reminder that the State of CSS survey is currently open. The browser vendors all pay a lot of attention to the results of these “State of” surveys, and the more people who take them, the more representative the results are… plus they are a great way to learn about features you didn’t know about! Hello Reader, A bit of a short newsletter this week, as I've been focusing on getting some content created and working on my...
View this email in your browser (or share it with a friend!) Hello Reader, More and more people I deeply respect and have learned a lot from over the years feel like they are speaking into a void, to the point where they are losing motivation to continue making content. And I know it’s not only people making content, either. While some people are embracing the changes, many feel things have changed and that their jobs are no longer what they signed up for, leading them to lose the passion for...
