Smashing Conf, CSS Day, and a special annoucement

Hello Reader,

Looks like I’ll be in Amsterdam a lot this year!

First, I’m heading there in less than a month from now for Smashing Conf, where I’m giving a talk and an in-person workshop (I've got a link with a discount below if you are able to make it).

And, if you can’t make it to that, I’m happy to announce I’ll be back in Amsterdam in June for CSS Day!

I’m so excited to be going back to CSS Day again. Speaking there in 2024 was a career highlight for me, and I’m pumped to be heading there again, in what's shaping up to be a great lineup.

And if you can make it to both, I will be giving a different talk at each 😅 (not that either isn’t worth it for all the other speakers as well!).

Of course, I realize that attending conferences like these is out of budget for a lot of people. Smashing does have a "convince your boss" PDF, as well as a template email, and it’s always worth asking (and, of course, you could modify the email template for CSS Day).

You can save a bit of money right now though, as CSS Day's tickets are still in early bird pricing, and you can use this link to get a bit of a discount for Smashing Conf tickets, including the workshop.

And for those who can’t make it, I will be making some behind-the-scenes videos for both events, similar to what I did for my experience in creating a Frontend Masters course.

And if you’d like to watch my previous talks, here is my CSS Day one, and here is my one from Smashing New York. And if you watch them, yes, I was incredibly nervous being on stage… hoping to be a bit calmer this time 😂.

As the name implies, in this one I take a look at a few ways we can simplify CSS animations.

Before I let you go, I wanted to let you know the new version of CSS Demystified is going to launch in just over a week from now.

I've had people asking about what's covered, so you can now find the table of content here. There are a few other lessons that still need to be added, but that is what will be there at launch.

I will be adding new modules over time as well, with the next one being "Writing Resilliant CSS", which will be later this year.

Cheers,
Kevin

Hello Reader, If you only have 10 or so minutes of free time for this email, instead of reading it, I’m going to ask that you either read this article or watch this video by Salma Alam-Naylor, where she explores her current thoughts on the tech industry and the impact AI is having on it. I’ve had a lot of thoughts on the current state of things circling around my head without being able to wrangle them in any coherent way, which she...

View this email in your browser (or share it with a friend!) Hello Reader, On Saturday morning, I passed 1 million subscribers on YouTube. I created my channel over 9 years ago. Around 5 months in, I hit 100 subscribers, and at the time, I was blown away that so many people liked my videos enough to bother subscribing. Three years later, I'd passed 100,000 subscribers, which I honestly didn't think was possible for a channel dedicated to vanilla HTML & CSS. And now it's one million. For a...

View this email in your browser (or share it with a friend!) Hello Reader, This week, I’m formatting things a little differently because the comments on a YouTube video I posted got me a little riled up 😅. So, starting with that video, I took a look at Temani Afif’s mind-blowing CSS-only graph theory CodePen. And while most people were pretty blown away by this as well, there were a fair number of comments about how this is breaking the separation of concerns and how CSS shouldn’t be able to...
