The greatest landing page ever challenge

Hello Reader,

A few months ago, I pitted the F1 team websites against each other, and I thought it would be fun to make a landing page for a fictional team that could at least challenge the few teams who’d done a good job with theirs.

I was pretty happy with what I’d come up with, but just as I was putting the finishing touches on it, Jason Lengstorf, of Learn with Jason and Leet Heat fame, reached out to let me know about a Greatest Landing Page Ever web dev challenge that he was about to release on CodeTV.

For the challenge, contestants needed to use GSAP, which I haven’t touched in ages, but this seemed like the right type of project for it, so I got to work adding it in.

We have so many features that make CSS animations easier than ever now, but there are still a lot of things we don’t have yet. In that video, I look at scroll-triggered animations (which they are working on adding to CSS), along with some more fun things, like animating text and splitting text to animate each character individually.

If you enjoyed that video, I’d suggest checking out the actual challenge on CodeTV, where three teams were pitted against each other with only 4 hours to put their landing pages together.

And if you don’t want to be left out, CodeTV is also running a Greatest Animated Landing Page Ever hackaton that you can take part in.

As a reminder, with the kids home for summer, this newsletter is in summer vacation mode. It’ll still be here (most weeks), but will be in this shorter format for the next little while.

Have a fantastic week!

Hello Reader, From my experience, there are a few reasons people push back on new things, but the most common one I see revolves around people preferring the old way of doing things. This makes sense, because they are comfortable with what they are used to, rather than the new way, which is different. When something new comes along, that means they have to learn it, which for a lot of people means that it’s slower. The thing is, in...

View this email in your browser (or share it with a friend!) Hello Reader, Last week on my second channel, I asked a question near the end of the video about whether or not people are worried that, thanks to more and more people using AI to write code, there would be less pressure on languages to evolve. That led to a lot of interesting comments, with a bit of a split on people’s opinions. The two main arguments were: AI producing more and more code just builds up the training data on the...

View this email in your browser (or share it with a friend!) Hello Reader,It’s hard not to come back from an event like CSS Day and not be excited about the future of CSS, and the web in general. There is a lot to be concerned about with the current state of things, but one thing that is super clear is that there are still a lot of super passionate people who love their craft, and seeing that passion, both in the talks from other speakers as well as when chatting with attendees, you can’t...
